Emmanuel Vertilaire, member of the Transitional Presidential Council, embezzled 1.5 million gourdes for the benefit of activists of the Pitit Desalin political party. This transaction, revealed by journalist Robenson Geffrard, was confirmed by a source close to the ULCC. The latter indicated that legal action will be considered "in due course".
The scandal raises concerns about the management of public funds. Debates on strengthening control mechanisms are resurfacing. The case highlights the challenges of fighting corruption in Haiti. Neither Vertilaire nor the authorities have commented on the accusations. The ULCC is under pressure to act quickly.
This case becomes a test to assess their commitment against fraud. Note that Emmanuel Vertilaire, Smith Augustin, and Louis Gérald Gilles are already involved in another case. They are accused of having tried to extort 100 million gourdes from the former chairman of the board of directors of the National Credit Bank.
