Haiti's Central Bank under attacked

According to media reports, armed gang members attacked the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) in the late afternoon of Monday March 18, 2024, in Port-au-Prince. The attacks resulted in NH officers killing several of the attackers.

According to reports, four gang members were killed by Bank security guards and PNH officers. 

This death toll has not been confirmed, as no official version of events is yet available. BRH management has not issued a statement on the attack, and the bank's website is inaccessible.

Early in the morning of March 19, however, the BRH posted to its  X account that an "incident that occurred yesterday near the premises". "Law enforcement and the security team responded with professionalism and efficiency", the post explained.

"We are deeply grateful to our agents and the national police for their vigilance and constant commitment to protecting our community".

Since the launch of their offensive on the capital on Thursday, February 29, 2024, the coalition gangs have not ceased to target the country's strategic institutions.

As recently as March 18, 2024, the management of Électricité d'Haïti reported that four substations in Port-au-Prince, as well as the Varreux power station had been destroyed and rendered totally dysfunctional in attacks by armed gangs.

According to the national electricity company, "inverters, batteries, electrical installations, electrical cables, important documents and computer and office equipment were taken by these thugs". The national electricity company called on the authorities to take steps to secure its multiple sites across Haiti.
