The mobilization had begun in Delmas 41. The participants were heading towards the Canadian embassy, in Delmas 75, when they were dispersed by law enforcement using tear gas.
During the demonstration, participants chanted, among other things: "Down with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé sou pouvwa" and "Down with ensekirite ak lavi chè".
The organizers are demanding respect for the Constitution, increased security, and the organization of elections that they want to be credible and transparent.
The protesters are invoking the Constitution
This mobilization follows a press conference held on Friday, August 7th in Delmas 75. The actors involved had announced several days of mobilization across the country to defend their demands.
They specifically cite Article 149 of the Haitian Constitution. According to their interpretation, in the event of a presidential vacancy, the provisional presidential function should fall to the president of the Court of Cassation, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
This position is part of the current debates on governance and political transition in Haiti. The organizers intend to maintain pressure on the authorities in order to advance their demands.
The mobilization should continue
The dispersal of the demonstration did not end the mobilization announced by its organizers. They affirm their intention to continue actions concerning the Constitution, security, and the socio-economic situation of the country.
They are also demanding the departure of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
