In a statement released this Monday, August 31, the EDE political party indicated that it had complied with this step as part of its participation in the electoral process. EDE clarified, however, that this action does not constitute an approval of the electoral calendar advocated by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP).
EDE participates in the process while maintaining its reserves
EDE affirms its commitment to democratic principles and the principle of alternation through the ballot box. The party explained that it has chosen to respect institutional requirements in order to prepare for its participation in the upcoming elections.
The political party, however, emphasized that this acknowledgment of the the date of December 13, 2026 is not an endorsement of the process.
This date has been chosen by the CEP for the first round of the presidential and legislative elections. According to the official calendar cited by EDE, its implementation remains contingent on security conditions and the availability of necessary financial resources.
EDE is concerned about the technical difficulties
The party also expressed concern about the difficulties encountered when registering members of political organizations online.
According to EDE, these problems raise questions about the operational capacity of the CEP to carry out, within the announced deadlines, all the operations necessary for the organization of the elections.
This position comes after reservations expressed by several political actors regarding various aspects of the electoral process. On August 26, the CEP met with several political groups to gather their demands and concerns, particularly regarding the implementation of the electoral decree and adherence to the electoral calendar.
A timetable deemed uncertain
EDE criticizes the CEP's desire to maintain a timetable whose political, security, technical, and operational conditions remain, according to the party, uncertain.
The EDE believes that this situation could further weaken the confidence of political actors and the population in the electoral process.
For EDE, organizing elections should not be limited to simply meeting a deadline. The party calls for the necessary conditions to be met for a free, fair, inclusive, transparent, and credible election.
EDE calls for dialogue with the Prime Minister
The party also reiterates its call to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé to quickly bring together the main stakeholders in the electoral process.
EDE particularly wants a dialogue bringing together the CEP, political parties as well as the various political groups and regroupings.
According to the political party, these discussions should make it possible to assess the feasibility of the timetable and, if necessary, to arrive at a realistic, credible and applicable deadline.
The stated objective is also to help restore the confidence of the population and political actors in the electoral process.
EDE between participation and vigilance
By confirming the registration of its 30,000 members, EDE takes a step in the electoral process while maintaining its reservations about the CEP's timetable.
The party intends to participate in the process without abandoning its criticisms of the conditions under which the next elections are being organized.
As December 13, 2026 approaches, the debate now focuses, according to EDE, as much on holding the elections as on the ability of institutions to create the conditions necessary for a credible vote.
