Gérald Nicolas, 54, was sentenced to five years in prison by the Canadian courts for planning an armed uprising against the Haitian government.

A resident of Lévis, Quebec, he was convicted in March of two terrorism-related charges. His plan, which never came to fruition, was to recruit a militia and acquire weapons to overthrow the government in Haiti.

The case came to light by chance during an investigation into another complaint. Investigators discovered documents detailing his intentions in his computer equipment.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of the facts and reiterated the importance of deterring such acts. For his part, Nicolas claimed to have acted out of conscience.
