The Canadian government has imposed sanctions against the former Haitian provisional president Jocelerme Privert and the former chief of staff of the former Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, lawyer Salim Succar.
They are accused of financing armed gangs in Haiti.
The information was broadcast by the Canadian press.Canadian ambassador to Port-au-Prince, Sébastien Carrière, and Canadian MP of Haitian origin Emmanuel Dubourg also shared the announcement on Twitter.
Canadian sanctions now effect seventeen Haitians from political and economic elites for their alleged relations with criminal groups, corruption and money laundering.
The Canadian government have already sanctioned, among others, the ex-president Michel Martelly, the former Prime Ministers Laurent Lamothe and Jean Henry Céant, the former parliamentarians Gary Bodeau, Rony Célestin, Youry Latortue and Joseph Lambert.
These new sanctions were made public a few hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the upcoming deployment of Canadian military vessels to Haiti.
These new military operations of the Canadian Navy will aim to “carry out surveillance and collect information on the activities of criminal gangs that are destabilizing the country”.
