To mark Black History month the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute hosted a webinar discussion on Canada's colonial role in the Caribbean, past and present, from Canadian trade relations with the slave plantation economy to gunboat diplomacy & Canadian banking power in the late 1800s. This event will feature discussion and Q&A with Paula Hastings (author of Dominion over Palm and Pine: A History of Canadian Aspirations in the British Caribbean), Kevin Edmonds ("An Illusive Independence: Neocolonial Intervention in the Caribbean"), Peter James Hudson (author of "Bankers and Empire: How Wall Street Colonized the Caribbean") & professor Tamanisha J John (Clark Atlanta University).

Kevin Edmonds is a professor of Caribbean Studies at the University of Toronto, specializing in Caribbean political economy, histories of alternative/illicit development, foreign intervention & the region’s radical political tradition. His publications include “Guns, Gangs and Garrison Communities in the Politics of Jamaica at the Turn of the Century” and “An Illusive Independence: Neocolonial Intervention in the Caribbean”.
Paula Hastings is author of Dominion over Palm and Pine: A History of Canadian Aspirations in the British Caribbean. She is Assistant Professor of History in the Department of Historical & Cultural Studies at UTSC & in the Tri-Campus Graduate Program at the University of Toronto. She is interested in Canada’s relationship with Britain and the Caribbean since Confederation & in the histories of imperialism/colonialism, race, migration & nationalism.
Peter James Hudson is Associate Professor of African American Studies and History at at UCLA. His research interests are in the history of capitalism, white supremacy & U.S. imperialism; the intellectual and political-economic history of the Caribbean and the Black world; & the history of Black radicalism & global anti-imperialism. He is the author of Bankers and Empire: How Wall Street Colonized the Caribbean (2017). He is also a member of the Black Alliance for Peace.
Tamanisha J. John is an Assistant Professor of International Political Economy at Clark Atlanta University where she teaches courses on International Political Economy and Politics and Global Issues. Her research interests include Caribbean development, economic imperialism, financial exclusion, and Canadian overseas banking.
