The Côteaux prosecutor's office is currently investigating the murder of Onès Espérance, whose body was discovered in a ravine on May 7, 2026. The case took a dramatic turn after the confession of the main suspect, Julihomme Espérance, nicknamed "Joli."

Arrested on May 10, he was questioned on Thursday, May 14, 2026, by Government Commissioner Kensley Benjamin. The hearing was covered by the local press.

According to reports, he stated without hesitation, "I killed him with my own hands, without anyone's help." During his interrogation, Julihomme Espérance claimed that his son belonged to a gang operating in Martissant, at the southern entrance to Port-au-Prince. He explained that Onès regularly traveled back and forth between the West and the South, where, according to him, he pursued criminal activities. The father also stated that he acted after receiving death threats from his son.

As part of the investigation, another man, James Jean Louis, was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the crime. However, Julihomme Espérance claims to have acted alone and completely exonerates the second suspect of any responsibility.

The father also revealed that he had already lost two other sons, Jonel and Mickenson Espérance, who, according to his statements, were also involved in gang-related activities in Martissant.

This case has sparked numerous reactions in the South and beyond. The relevant authorities have a compelling duty to shed full light on this family tragedy with its particularly shocking circumstances.
