Haiti 's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) postponed the established period for the electoral campaign and left the presidential and legislative elections, whose first round was scheduled for December 13, 2026, without a defined date.
“The period initially planned for the election campaign has been postponed,” the organization said in a statement, without setting a new date for the start of campaign activities.
The CEP added that the updated electoral calendar “will be made public as soon as possible.”
The decision once again puts on hold a process with which Haiti sought to hold its first elections in a decade.
The schedule announced in July envisioned starting the campaign on October 5 and holding the first round of the presidential and legislative elections on December 13. A potential second round was planned for February 21, 2027.
Candidate registration extended
In addition to postponing the campaign, the electoral authorities extended the deadline for candidates to complete their registration until October 31.
The agency explained that the extension will allow candidates and political organizations to comply with the formalities contemplated in the current legal and regulatory framework.
However, the statement does not confirm that the vote can still be held on December 13, nor does it establish an alternative date.
Therefore, it is necessary to wait for the publication of the new calendar before determining when Haitians will go to the polls.
Haiti has not held elections since 2016 and has remained without an elected president since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
Since then, the political crisis, the weakening of institutions and the advance of armed groups have prevented the full restoration of the authorities chosen by popular vote.
