The Haitian government and the European Union representation signed a €9 million financing agreement on Tuesday. This agreement aims to "support the implementation of the "Plan for Increasing Customs Revenue and Combating Smuggling and Narcotics (PARLUCOS)", developed by the Customs Administration (AGD) for the period 2023-2026, and strengthen the capacity of Customs in the fight against smuggling, illegal drug and arms trafficking, tax revenue mobilization, trade facilitation, and protection of local businesses," reports the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et des Cultes (MAEF).

By signing of this agreement, the AGD's infrastructure and equipment will be modernized, its human resources will be strengthened, and digital systems for managing customs operations will be implemented. According to the government, these actions will not only improve the transparency and efficiency of customs clearance processes, but also limit the risk of corruption.

The MAEF representative reiterated "the Haitian government's commitment to working to build a better future."

"We are aware of the major challenges that arise, particularly in the difficult security context the country is facing. The Haitian government is, however, determined and resolutely focused on the future: the reappropriation of the border and non-border customs offices is the fundamental objective to ensure the successful implementation of these reforms. More than an important step towards the modernization of the customs administration, this action will be an essential contribution to the peace, security, and stability of the country," he stated.
