Transitional Presidential Council member Laurent Saint-Cyr met with the new Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, on the sidelines of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice, France. According to a June 8 Presidency press release, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the crisis in Haitian.
Albert Ramdin has placed the Haiti among the top priorities of his term as head of the OAS. According to the press release, the meeting with Saint-Cyr was deemed "fruitful" and focused on regional responses to the crisis and the ongoing political transition.
"The Presidential Advisor congratulated the latter and praised his availability as well as his commitment to a coherent response to the Haitian crisis and active support for the transition process," the press release read.
Saint-Cyr, who represents the private sector representative within the TPC, also "reaffirmed the Presidential Council's desire to lead the country towards a return to constitutional order, with the support of international partners, notably the OAS."
For his part, according to the Presidency's statement, the OAS Secretary General expressed his organization's willingness to play a constructive role. He emphasized security, through capacity building for the Haitian National Police, combating arms trafficking, securing ports, and combating armed gangs. He also mentioned humanitarian aid for displaced persons, the search for a national consensus in coordination with CARICOM, and support for the Presidential Council in organizing general elections and the constitutional referendum.
The two parties also discussed the possibility of deploying a regional security mission to Haiti, under the coordination of the OAS, to contribute to stabilization efforts and the sustainable restoration of security in the country.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which is taking place in Nice from June 9 to 13. This international event, co-organized by France and Costa Rica, provides a platform for vulnerable island countries like Haiti.
