With just four days to go before the February 7, 2026 deadline, debates surrounding the future of the transitional government are intensifying. In an interview with our newsroom this Tuesday, February 3, 2026, René Monplaisir, national coordinator of the Secteur paysan populaire haïtien(SPPH), clearly stated his organization's position: Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aimé must remain in office to continue efforts regarding security and the organization of the upcoming elections.

According to the farmers' leader, the country's security situation remains worrying and requires continued government action. He believes that changing course at this stage risks exacerbating instability and hindering the progress already underway.

"Today, the priority is security and the elections. We must move forward, not backward," argues René Monplaisir.

Acknowledging that Haitian political life is marked by differing positions and sometimes opposing interests, the coordinator of the SPPH points out that these differences are part of the democratic process. However, he believes that the time for political squabbles is over; now is the time to find concrete solutions.

Close to the political family of former President René Préval, the Haitian Popular Peasant Sector believes that the current political structure allows the Prime Minister to fully assume his responsibilities, particularly in the fight against insecurity which hits the popular classes and rural areas hard.

René Monplaisir advocates for opening a dialogue with all sectors of national life in order to reach a minimum consensus on current priorities. He clarifies that his organization respects the various positions expressed by political actors, whether they support or oppose keeping the Prime Minister in office.

“Each group speaks according to its reality, its geographical space and its political positioning. We, at the level of the popular peasant sector, look first and foremost at what is good for the country,” he affirms.

For the SPPH, the Prime Minister's main role remains clear: to restore security, facilitate free movement on the roads, reduce the influence of armed groups and create the conditions necessary for the organization of elections throughout the national territory.

René Monplaisir points out that several strategic areas of the country remain affected by insecurity, making daily life difficult for citizens and paralyzing economic activity.

Regarding the elections, the national coordinator of the SPPH expressed support for the announcement of a realistic electoral calendar, even though the precise date of the vote remains to be determined. He hopes that the Haitian state will succeed in organizing inclusive, secure, and transparent elections, allowing the population to freely express its will.

In this sense, the Haitian Popular Peasant Sector believes that maintaining Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aimé after February 7, 2026 constitutes, in the current context, a credible option to face security challenges and prepare for the return to democratic order.
