A new contingent of Chadian soldiers arrived in Haiti on Thursday, September 17, to join the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The announcement was made this Friday by the mission on its official Twitter account.
The FRG did not specify the number of troops involved. It indicated that this new contingent is intended to reinforce the personnel already deployed and support the continued deployment of the force.
The FRG continues its deployment
This arrival comes as the FRG continues its expansion. According to the Security Council Report, its military component numbered 1,083 personnel as of July 8, 2026. The civilian component then comprised 16 people.
The force began its first patrols on June 1st. It conducted its first security operation on June 21st. However, its deployment remained limited at the beginning of August.
Full operational capability is then expected between October and the end of 2026.
Contingents from Chad, Jamaica, Mongolia and Sri Lanka joined the FRG after the gradual withdrawal of Kenyan forces in April.
A force authorized to mobilize 5,500 personnel
The FRG was established by UN Security Council Resolution 2793, adopted on September 30, 2025. It replaced the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).
Its initial mandate is twelve months. The force can include up to 5,500 military and police personnel.
The FRG is tasked with conducting operations against armed groups, protecting critical infrastructure, and facilitating humanitarian access. It must work with the Haitian National Police (PNH) and the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd'H).
The UN has also established the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH). This office provides logistical and operational support to the force and has been fully operational since April 1, 2026.
The security situation remains a cause for concern.
The strengthening of the FRG comes in a context marked by the persistence of armed violence.
According to BINUH, at least 1,642 people were killed and 745 others injured between January and March 2026.
Between April and June, at least 1,408 people were killed and 656 others injured, according to the same source. Particularly significant violence was recorded in several areas of the capital and in the Artibonite region.
Population displacement also remains significant. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 1,466,862 internally displaced persons in May 2026.
In the west, the attacks carried out in Kenscoff on August 23 displaced more than 2,600 people. In Artibonite, the violence recorded since July 6 in Dessalines and Petite-Rivière has displaced approximately 6,250 people, according to the UNFPA.
The Chadian contingent reinforces the international force
The arrival of these Chadian soldiers therefore constitutes a further reinforcement of the FRG.
The mission did not specify their numbers or the areas in which they will be deployed.
The FRG is thus continuing its deployment while violence, population displacement and humanitarian needs remain high in Haiti.
